Descrizione
Il genere Ameerega appartiene alla sottofamiglia Colostethinae. È caratteristico che la loro pelle dorsale non è liscia e lucida, come nel caso della maggior parte delle specie della sottofamiglia Dendrobatinae. Ma mentre la pelle dorsale degli altri generi delle Colostethinae<7i> è ricoperta irregolarmente di piccole verruche più o meno nettamente rialzate o coniche, che giacciono ravvicinate nella zona posteriore del dorso e sulle cosce e diventano più rade o assenti verso il davanti, la pelle delle specie del genere Ameerega ha una struttura uniformemente granulare. Questa caratteristica distingue anche il genere Ameerega dal genere Epipedobates, da cui è stato scorporato dopo una revisione totale delle rane dardo velenoso nel 2006. Il primo dito è più lungo del secondo. Il terzo dito mostra gonfiore nei maschi sessualmente maturi. Durante il corteggiamento, la femmina si accovaccia davanti al maschio. Il maschio afferra la testa della femmina durante l'accoppiamento.
Diffusione
Con poche eccezioni, il genere Ameerega è originario dell'est delle Ande. La maggior parte delle specie vive nelle pianure, ma alcune si trovano ad altitudini di 1400 m. Ameerega andina e Ameerega erythromos si trovano sulle pendici del Pacifico delle Ande a quote moderate. In Brasile , le rane si trovano negli stati del Mato Grosso do Sul e Goiás a nord e nord-ovest del bacino amazzonico . Nell'America del Sud occidentale si trovano dalla Bolivia attraverso il Perù e l'Ecuador fino alla Colombia e al Venezuela. L'Ameerega maculata di Panama è nota solo da un esemplare tipo.
